MATTHEW TAPPER, MS
Systems Theory is the foundation of Marriage and Family Therapy, offering a completely different perspective of people, problems, and change. From this lens, presenting problems are often symptoms of an underlying process or cycle that we feel stuck in, and our best solutions to solve our experience of the problem actually plays a role in maintaining it rather than fixing it. For couples and families, the problem itself is the pattern of interaction found between the partners and not within them. Our attempts to solve our unique experience of the problem only reinforces the problematic experience for the other and how they attempt to solve it in return. These cycles also apply to individuals who struggle with unwanted thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; again, in your efforts of solving the problem you only feel more stuck with it around the bend. My job is to put myself out of a job by experiencing genuine change that breaks this current version of normal, allowing room for a better one. I know there's a way in which you make sense without you having to be a problem. Talk to me to find out how.
